If Ascension never happened
If Ascension never happened and
Jesus was here with us physically,
we would be sitting at his feet like Mary of Bethany
or serving him like Martha.
Now that he is not,
we are to serve him in each other,
especially those
he called ‘the least of my people’.
If Jesus was here with us,
we would expect him to do the things that needed doing,
Now that he is not,
we are the ones
who have to do what he would do,
We, the hands and heart of Jesus.
If Jesus was here with us,
He would have taught the parables
and himself challenged the Pharisees of our times.
Now that he is not,
We are to narrate the parables needed today,
And speak truth to power like he did.
If Jesus was here with us, we would be dependent on him as our leader,
expecting him to state clearly what he wants done.
Now that he is not, we have to draw on our own gifts,
discern together as a community,
within it, learn leadership and followership,
and wait on always for the inspiration of the Spirit.
If Jesus was here with us,
we would be busy worshipping or admiring him.
Now that he is not, we realise that his dream is up to us, his disciples,
We realise that he counts on us to spread the good news,
Not by our words, but by how we love.
